Q1.Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working?
Apply the hazard warning light switch located above the gears and check that all 6 indicators are working by walking around the car.
Q2.Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before you start a journey?
Turn the ignition key and apply pressure to the brake. Your brake should not feel spongy or slack. Your brake should feel firm under foot. Brakes should be tested as you move off and your car should not pull to one side.
Q3.Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is. And tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level?
The water level container has a blue top, located on the nearside of the engine, and has a minimum and maximum marker. Always keep it topped up with screen wash
Q4.Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car? The examiner will assist you as you will need to turn your ignition on, but you don’t need to start the car.
Operate the brake pedal and use a reflection from a wall, garage door etc., or ask someone to check for you.
Q5.Show me / Explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey?
Apply gentle pressure on the steering wheel as you turn the ignition on, if the steering feels light it is working properly, and if it feels heavy, it’s not working
Q6. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how the pressures should be checked?
Always refer to the manufacturers guide or the internal door pillar on the passenger’s side. Use a reliable pressure gauge to adjust your tyre pressures. Always check your pressures when your tyres are cold and remember to re-fit the tyre caps. Don’t forget your spare tyre.
Q7.Show me how you would check the handbrake for excessive wear, make sure you keep your car under control
Apply your foot brake firmly to keep your car under control. Demonstrate by applying the hand brake so that it is fully applied and can secure itself. And it should not go past the exceeded working travel.
Q8.Open the bonnet and identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level?
The engine coolant is located on the offside of the engine, you can identify it by its colour (pink fluid) check the level is between the minimum and maximum marker.
Q9. Open the bonnet and identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil?
Identify and remove the dip-stick which is located in the centre of the engine. Remove the dip- stick (yellow) and wipe it clean. Replace the dip-stick and remove again, the oil level can now be seen and you can check between the minimum and maximum markers. Always check the oil level when the engine is cold and your car is on level ground.
Q10. Tell me how you would check that the head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash?
The centre of the head restraint should be level with your ears.
Q11.Open the bonnet and identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid?
The hydraulic brake fluid is located to the back rear of the engine (black and yellow cap) and has maximum and minimum markers
Q12.Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and their general condition is safe to use on the road?
Always check your tyres when they are cold. Make sure you have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central breath of the tyre. Check there are no rips, tears or bulges on the circumference of the tyre walls.
Q13.Show me how you would check that the horn is working? (Off road only)
Push the centre of the steering wheel.
Q14.Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers?
To wash the front window screen, pull the lever towards you. To wash the rear window; push the lever away from you
Q15.Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working (no need to exit the vehicle).
Operate the round switch to the right of your steering wheel; turn once for side lights and twice for dipped lights. Your dash board will illuminate. Your ignition must be turned on for this exercise
Q16.Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear windows
Push the demister button to clear the back window and then operate the air conditioning to clear the moisture from the car (which will dry your windows) your ignition must be turned on for this exercise
Q17.Show me how you would switch on the fog lights and explain when you should use it?
Fog lights should only be used when your visibility is reduced to less than 100 meters (do not say in fog) your lights should be turned on. Then press the Fog light which is situated just to the right of your lights. An orange light will illuminate on your dash to confirm the fog lights are on. Your ignition must be turned on for this exercise
Q18.Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with the anti-lock brake system?
A warning light will illuminate on the dash. This light should cancel after the car has been started
Q19.Show me how you switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car?
To apply your full beam your dipped lights must be on. To apply your full beam, push the lever on the left towards the dash and you will see a blue light appear on the dash.
